JULY 2024

Centivo Lounge (formely HSBC Bank)

62 and 64 Market Street

Centivo Lounge is a café/bar based in the former HSBC Bank in Market Street and is part of the West Country-based Loungers plc group.

This Nationwide chain has transformed this historic building, with heavily patterned wallpapers, tiling and stripped wooden featured alongside vintage sofas, upholstered lounge chairs, eclectic artwork and statement wall and pendant lighting.

This stunning transformation in the former bank, opened in January 2024 and also features a variety of cosy and elegant drinking and dining areas including the converted Bank Vault and Managers Office. The outdoor patio area to the rear of the building is also proving to be popular with customers during the summer months.

The new Business actively encourages connectivity with their community by working with local groups, charities, organisations and businesses. Centivo Lounge Manager Chris Hancock stated that the new business had been No 1 in the company (out of 220 sites) during its first 6 weeks of trading.

Former buildings on this site were No 62 Market Street which was owned by the Grammar School and leased by Thomas Smith Kirkland in 1829 and remained a doctors or surgeons house until 1880 (Mr Kirkland was a descendant of Dr Kirkland who was summoned to treat the steward John Johnson murdered by Earl Ferrers at Staunton Harold Hall in January 1760).

No 64 Market Street housed the original Queen’s Head coaching Inn with access to the stables via the current Lamb Yard and was sold in 1815 with the name and trade transferred to 79 Market Street (current location).

In 1896 both buildings (62 and 64 Market Street) were demolished and a new Bank built. This traded as the London City and Midland Bank, later the Midland Bank and finally HSBC which closed in August 2022.
