Ashby Civic Society and Ashby Museum chose an interesting building for the May 2024 nomination...
108 Market Street (opposite The Style Hive Café).
Probably built by Mr Perks (a lawyer) in the mid to late 1700’s who won a lot of money and then subsequently rented the property to Samuel Webster in 1796. Samuel was a solicitor and a free-mason member of the Tyrian Lodge, Derby. (He is buried in St Helens Church, graveyard.)
Over the years the building has been used for different and interesting businesses including an Artist William Hunter, Cabinet Maker Robert Orchard, Jeweller Charles Orchard and by Solicitor’s Dewes and Musson.
Older residents will remember Miss Robinsons and their Hat /Fancy Drapers shop. They continued their Business (registered in 1936) until well into their 80's.
In the early 1990's the Property was sympathetically converted back to a striking 'sash fronted and bow-windowed brick tiled 3 storey residence' and attained an Ashby Civic Society Design Award in 1995.
